PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has forayed into Guyana, securing a 25% stake in Block S4, a shallow-water offshore exploration area in the South American nation.
The award was made through Petronas’ wholly owned subsidiary, Petronas Energy Guyana Sdn Bhd, as part of a consortium with TotalEnergies EP Guyana Shallow SAS (40%) and QatarEnergy (35%). TotalEnergies will operate the block.
Covering 1,787 sq km in the Guyana-Suriname Basin, Block S4 lies along key hydrocarbon migration pathways, marking a milestone in Petronas’ international expansion.
The consortium’s award follows a successful bid in the 2022 Guyana Licensing Round.
Petronas’ VP of exploration, Faisal Bakar, said the venture underscores the company’s commitment to unlocking the basin’s potential, creating long-term value, and strengthening its upstream presence in the Americas. —TMR
