CIMB–WeChat Pay collaboration targets Chinese tourist spending

CIMB Bank Berhad and CIMB Islamic Bank Bhd are partnering with Weixin Pay, also known as WeChat Pay, via a Weixin Mini Programme to facilitate cross-border payments and support Malaysian merchants serving inbound Chinese tourists.

CIMB said the initiative is aimed at improving payment convenience while raising merchants’ visibility among Chinese visitors, as inbound travel from China continues to recover.

The bank said the collaboration strengthens cross-border transactions by enabling merchants to accept Weixin Pay, showcase offerings digitally, engage Chinese travellers before arrival and facilitate in-store payments via DuitNow QR, particularly across the retail, food and beverage and hospitality sectors.

CIMB head of consumer banking Malaysia Daniel Cheong said the collaboration reflects the bank’s focus on advancing cross-border connectivity for businesses.

“This collaboration underscores CIMB’s drive to advancing cross-border connectivity and creating opportunities that uplift communities and businesses, in line with our purpose of Advancing Customers and Society.

“By leveraging CIMB’s digital capabilities with Weixin Pay’s extensive global reach, we are enabling merchants to reach high-value travellers and participate more fully in the digital economy,” he said in a statement.

He added that through the programme, merchants gain access to a platform that is familiar to Chinese consumers, making it easier for travellers to discover, engage and transact seamlessly even before arriving in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Weixin Pay assistant regional director for Southeast Asia David Chong said Malaysia is a key focus market for the expansion of its Mini Programme.

“Malaysia has become one of the key focus markets for the programme expansion, driven by strong demand from local businesses looking to reach Chinese travellers through digital-first channels.

“Weixin Pay is actively strengthening our ecosystem in Malaysia — from payment innovation to merchant enablement — and this collaboration with CIMB marks an important milestone in the journey,” he said.

From Jan 1, 2026, participating merchants will receive dedicated merchant pages within the Weixin Pay ecosystem to showcase their products and services.
